Challenges for Can Gio seaport development

Ensuring a sufficient cargo volume is the prerequisite for a seaport to maintain operation and develop. However, it might be a tall order to turn Can Gio seaport into an international transshipment hub in the foreseeable future. An overview of shipping and import-export The total cargo throughput at Vietnam’s seaports in 2022 was 733.18 million tons with an import-export value amounting to US$732.5 billion. The figure was US$668.54 billion in 2021 and US$543.9 billion in 2020. In this year’s first half, the value was US$316.65 billion, falling by 15.2% against the same period last year. The total cargo throughput at all seaports in Region 4 encompassing HCMC, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Long An was 295.6 million tons in 2022, 298.4 million tons in 2021, some 298.8 million tons in 2020, and 297 million tons in 2019. As such, the cargo throughput in Region 4 has been ebbing in recent years, though these seaports are the most important ones, normally accounting for 43% of the total cargo throughput in the country.
