HCMC – China has overtaken the U.S. as the largest buyer of Vietnamese agro-forestry-fishery products, with its imports amounting to US$1.27 billion in the year’s first two months.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam’s total exports of agro-forestry-fishery products in January-February were estimated at US$6.28 billion, down 22% over the same period of last year.

However, the entire agriculture sector still enjoyed a trade surplus of US$559 million, albeit a 68.5% decline over last year.

Statistics of the ministry showed that Vietnam’s agro-forestry-fishery exports to China in the first two months reached US$1.27 billion, while the U.S. was Vietnam’s second-largest buyer of the products valued at US$1.19 billion.

This month, the ministry will work with the customs of Yunnan and Nanning provinces in China to remove hurdles and boost the trade of agro-forestry-fishery products between the two countries.

On February 27, China’s General Administration of Customs approved Vietnam’s 163 planting area codes and 67 packaging facilities eligible for exporting durian to China, bringing the total number of planting area codes to 246 and packaging facilities to 97.

Vietnam’s durian exports to China have continued growing robustly since the fruit was officially exported to China and is forecast to generate total export revenue of US$1 billion this year.
