HCMC – The Tan Cang Foundation, a vessel of Saigon Newport Corporation, arrived at Tan Cang Cai Cui Port in Can Tho City on December 29, marking the comeback of the container ship route to the Mekong Delta city after a six-year hiatus.
The vessel was the first to dock at the Can Tho port cluster following the completion of a fairway dredging project along the Quan Chanh Bo Canal. It set sail from the northern city of Haiphong on December 24.
Given Can Tho City’s position as a regional transmission gateway, the container ship routes are expected to provide local businesses with integrated logistics solutions, enabling them to lower costs and reduce delivery time, according to Phung Ngoc Minh, vice president of Saigon Newport Corporation.
In 2023, Saigon Newport Corporation and Vietnam Maritime Corporation plan to launch two monthly shipments to the Can Tho port cluster for each, possibly increasing shipping frequency based on local demand.
In addition to Tan Cang Cai Cui Port, the Mekong Delta’s largest, the port cluster in Can Tho City also includes Cai Cui Port.
The operation of domestic container lines, such as the Haiphong-Ha Tinh-Danang-Quy Nhon-Nghi Son-Cai Mep-Can Tho route, has sought to strengthen interregional marine transportation connections.
