HCMC – Electricity consumption in HCMC reached 9.75 billion kWh in the first four months of 2024, an 11.4% increase compared to the same period last year, according to a report from HCMC Power Corporation (EVNHCMC).
During this period, the city consumed an average of 83.36 million kWh daily, up by 11.1% from the previous year.
EVNHCMC reported that daily electricity consumption hit a record high of 104.513 million kWh on May 3, up by 9.13 million kWh against the city’s peak consumption last year recorded on May 6.
In the first 22 days of May 2024, power consumption exceeded last year’s peak on 14 days, with five days surpassing the 100 million kWh mark. Recently, consumption has partially declined due to widespread rainfall and cooler temperatures, but the city’s average electricity consumption over the past six days remained steady at 94.2 million kWh.
Bui Trung Kien, deputy general director of EVNHCMC, said that this record-breaking electricity consumption is unprecedented and poses a risk of overloading due to the sudden rise in demand, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The city’s electricity sector has advised residents and businesses to increase energy-saving efforts. Power firms have been directed to collaborate with local authorities to promote and support electricity conservation measures.
