HCMC – The northern province of Ninh Binh has sought approval from the Ministry of Construction to widen the Cau Gie-Ninh Binh Expressway to six lanes in response to the increase in traffic.
The expansion of the Cao Bo-Mai Son Expressway from four to six lanes has already begun, with completion targeted for April 30, 2026. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Construction is also planning to widen the Mai Son-National Highway 45 section to six lanes.
Once the Cao Bo-Mai Son section is expanded, the 50-kilometer Cau Gie-Ninh Binh Expressway will become a bottleneck as it remains at four lanes, despite land clearance already being completed for six lanes.
Meanwhile, traffic volume on the North-South Expressway continues to rise, with frequent congestion, especially on weekends and holidays, affecting transportation and socio-economic development.
To ensure infrastructure synchronization and ease congestion, the provincial government sought approval to expand the Cau Gie-Ninh Binh Expressway to six lanes.
The Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) had earlier submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Finance, seeking government approval to take charge of expanding the Cau Gie-Ninh Binh Expressway.
The 50-kilometer expressway project starts at the connection with the Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway in Hanoi and ends at National Highway 10, between Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh.
The expansion is expected to cost around VND2.1 trillion, with VND840 billion from the state budget and VND1.27 trillion from corporate funds. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026 and wrap up by 2028.
