Ban Thach, a village renowned for its traditional sedge mat weaving in Quang Nam Province, is home to vast fields of sedge and jute. Taking advantage of these abundant natural resources, locals use sedge and jute fibers as the primary materials for weaving their iconic mats.
With a history spanning over 500 years, Ban Thach’s mat weaving craft has not only provided a livelihood for its residents but has also preserved this traditional skill through generations. At its peak, 700 of the village’s 1,356 residents were engaged in mat weaving.
Recently, Ban Thach’s residents completed the sedge harvest and are now preparing the fibers for weaving mats in time for the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday season.
