HCMC – The Hau Giang biomass power plant has been inaugurated, becoming the first power station to run on rice husks and wood chips as fuel in Vietnam.
The inauguration ceremony was held yesterday, April 25, by the Hau Giang Biomass Energy JSC, in coordination with the provincial authorities and the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The plant has a total capacity of 20MW and is expected to consume around 130,000 tons of rice husks and wood chips annually. It has been connected to the national grid via a 6.3-kilometer double-circuit 22kV transmission line.
The project is anticipated to help secure clean energy supply for the region while utilizing Hau Giang’s existing resources and infrastructure, especially by converting agricultural by-products into electricity in line with circular economy and green, sustainable development models.
According to the investor, the plant will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the Government’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The facility is expected to cut annual emissions by more than 36,800 tons of CO2 equivalent.
