HCMC – Some VND460 trillion sourced from the State budget will be invested in various projects in the Mekong Delta in the 2021-2025 period, heard a conference in Can Tho City on June 21.

The conference was chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the 2021-2030 Mekong Delta development and investment plan. Speaking at the event, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said that of the total capital, VND320 trillion would be invested in numerous projects in the region, up 23.3% against the 2016-2020 allocation, while the remaining VND140 trillion will flow into some ministries to boost the region’s development.

The capital allocation will help complete several key regional projects, including Trung Luong-My Thuan-Can Tho, Can Tho-Ca Mau and Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang expressways, national highways, seaside roads, airports and salinity control.

The funding is expected to fuel the region’s socio-economic growth, which will make the Mekong Delta region greener and more sustainable and adapt to climate change.

Apart from turning challenges into opportunities, such as living with flooding ad saltwater, the region will utilize the workforce and enhance the application of technology to create high value in line with the growth plan.

Under the plan, the region will focus on agriculture, industry and urbanization to become one of the nation’s leading sustainable and dynamic agricultural economic hubs by 2030.

In addition to developing traffic infrastructure to increase connectivity with other regions, the region will make effective use of water resources for production and daily activities, the local media reported.
