HCMC – The government of Hanoi City has set ambitious targets to complete 96.8 kilometers of urban railway by 2030 and extend the network to 550 kilometers by 2045, according to local media reports.

The Hanoi People’s Committee has recently sought feedback from the Ministry of Transport on a draft investment plan for the city’s urban railway system. This plan emphasizes the importance of urban railways as the backbone of transportation infrastructure.

Specifically, the city aims to construct and operationalize 96.8 kilometers of urban railway by 2030, proposing investment principles for constructing additional urban railway lines with schedules extending to 2035. The preliminary total investment for this period is estimated at US$14.6 billion.

Achieving this goal would enable the city’s urban railway to serve 7-8% of the public passenger volume, accommodating 2.2-2.6 million trips per day.

By 2035, Hanoi plans to have around 301 kilometers of urban railway in operation, with total investment capital estimated at around US$22.6 billion. This expanded network is expected to serve 35-40% of the public passenger volume, potentially handling 9.7-11.8 million trips per day.

By 2045, all 14 urban railway lines, covering a total length of 550 kilometers as outlined in the capital’s general planning, are expected to be completed.

To achieve these objectives, the Hanoi People’s Committee will prioritize investments in urban railway lines within central urban areas to address escalating traffic congestion.

The city will focus on developing urban railway lines that connect major transportation hubs, such as the airport, national railway station, and densely populated urban areas.
