HCMC – The government of Hanoi has rolled out a project worth nearly US$55 million to improve accessibility to the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line.
This morning, October 7, the Hanoi Management Board for Transportation Works Construction and Investment Projects held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Strengthening Sustainable Urban Transport for the Hanoi Metro Line 3 project.
The project will require US$54.75 million in funds, of which US$48.95 million will be financed by the Clean Technology Fund and the Asian Development Bank, while the remaining US$5.8 million will come from the city budget.
The project aims to develop a public, environmentally-friendly transportation system integrated with multi-modal stations. In this way, it will increase ridership of public transport and reduce dependency on vehicle ownership, said Nguyen Chi Cuong, director of the Hanoi Management Board for Transportation Works Construction and Investment Projects.
According to him, the project will comprise three phases. In the first phase, the management board will build park-and-ride facilities in some stations and improve nearby infrastructure works to make it easier for passengers to use the service.
In the second phase, the management board will pilot some low-emission buses with new technology, apply smart transport and operational control systems on buses, improve bus stops and build new public parking lots.
In the last phase, the management board will seek ways to increase public transport use and reduce private vehicles in six districts: Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Dong Da, Cau Giay, Bac Tu Liem and Nam Tu Liem.
The project was funded under Loan 8291-VIE between Vietnam and the Asian Development Bank and is expected to be completed by 2025.
