HCMC – Hanoi City will ban single-use plastic products in hotels and tourist accommodations starting next year, under a new resolution aimed at reducing plastic waste.
Items banned include toothbrushes, razors, cotton swabs, shower caps, and plastic packaging for personal care products such as toothpaste, shampoo, and body wash.
The measure is part of a broader plan passed unanimously by the Hanoi People’s Council on July 10. It sets out phased restrictions on plastic use in production, retail, and public services.
From 2027, markets and convenience stores will be prohibited from giving out non-biodegradable plastic bags for free. By 2028, they must stop using such bags and plastic foam containers entirely, except for prepackaged goods.
E-commerce businesses will be required to reduce plastic packaging and cushioning materials, or collect them to prevent environmental leakage.
By 2031, Hanoi will ban the production and import of single-use plastics, non-biodegradable packaging, and products containing microplastics, with limited exceptions for exports and product packaging.
Government agencies will also be barred from using single-use plastics in daily operations, especially when handling food.
The resolution aligns with Hanoi’s goals to reduce plastic pollution and promote sustainable urban development.
