HCMC – The government of HCMC has requested Thu Duc City and district authorities to continue assessing the buildings affected by tremors from the Myanmar earthquake, with the work to be completed by June 15.

The HCMC People’s Committee on May 28 directed authorities in Thu Duc City and 21 districts to inspect high-rise structures, including office buildings, hotels, hospitals, schools, apartment blocks, and shopping malls, for signs of damage following tremors from the Myanmar earthquake.

Based on the findings, local officials are expected to guide building owners, management boards, and operators in conducting detailed inspections, damage assessments, and repairs to ensure safety.

Earlier, the Department of Construction had urged all districts to report on the impact of tremors on buildings that accommodate large crowds. The initiative aims to identify potential structural risks and prevent accidents.

So far, only 8 out of 22 districts have submitted their reports. Among them, District 8 reported 342 buildings with signs of damage such as cracked walls and broken windows. No structural collapses or casualties have been recorded.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar in the early hours of March 28 was one of the strongest seismic events recorded in Southeast Asia this year. Although the epicenter was far from Vietnam, residents in high-rise buildings across HCMC reported feeling prolonged tremors lasting from several seconds to nearly a minute.
