HCMC – HCMC will use its own budget, instead of official development assistance (ODA) as originally planned, to construct Metro Line No.2, which connects Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Tham Luong Depot in District 12,
The HCMC government announced its development plan for the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro line on November 25. This is the city’s second metro project, after the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien line that is scheduled to begin commercial service on December 22.
As part of the updated plan, the metro line will be built with the city’s budget. The plan also specifies a link with Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien) at the Ben Thanh Station area.
The project will serve as a pilot initiative under the mechanisms outlined in the Urban Railway Development Plan, as stipulated in Conclusion 49 of the Politburo.
The Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) has been tasked with collaborating with relevant departments to finalize the implementation plan for Metro Line No. 2. Relevant units are conducting a thorough assessment of potential issues to ensure a smooth implementation process.
The HCMC Finance and Investment State-owned Company will coordinate with the Department of Finance and other units to explore suitable funding options for the project. A detailed report on fund mobilization is expected to be submitted to the HCMC People’s Committee by November 30.
The Ben Thanh-Tham Luong urban railway will require an investment of nearly VND47,900 billion and will span over 11 kilometers, with over nine kilometers underground and the remaining section above ground.
The line will pass through six districts: 1, 3, 10, 12, Tan Binh, and Tan Phu, linking the city center with the northwestern gateway. Originally approved over a decade ago, the project has undergone several adjustments and is now slated for completion by 2030.
