HCMC – The Central Highlands province of Kon Tum was struck by a magnitude-4.7 earthquake today, August 23, the most powerful quake in a century in the province.

The province’s Kong Plong District experienced the quake at a depth of 8.2 kilometers at around 2:00 p.m. on the day, according to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center under the Institute of Geophysics.

Three minutes later, another 3.6-magnitude quake hit the district, the local media reported.

On April 18, the district and its neighboring areas were shaken by a 4.5-magnitude earthquake.

Kon Plong District has constantly been hit by quakes since April last year, right after the Thuong Kon Tum hydropower facility started operating its first generator on March 24, 2021.

Over the past year, Kon Plong District has reported over 200 quakes, rising by six-fold against the previous century.
