HCMC – Six to eight storms or tropical depressions are expected to occur in the East Sea from now until the end of this year, with four to six of them likely to make landfall in Vietnam, mainly in the central part of the nation, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Tran Quang Nang, head of the center’s Weather Forecast Department, said that the storms may occur successively in October and November and mostly affect provinces and cities in the central region.
With a high frequency of storms in a short time, he warned that the central region, which is vulnerable to landslides and flashfloods during torrential rain, could face multiple disasters. Accordingly, apart from preventive measures, the central provinces need to outline more effective plans to curb the damages caused by bad weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the south-central and southern provinces must also exercise caution over storms expected later. All preventive measures must be adopted right now to minimize the negative impacts of natural disasters, he said.
Vu Duc Long, deputy director of the center, forecast that two to three waves of huge floods may occur in rivers in the central region, as heavy downpours are predicted to hit the region in October and November.
Moreover, this month, four to six cold spells are likely to affect the country. The impact of cold air and a tropical turbulence over the East Sea may see medium to heavy rain in the central localities from Thanh Hoa to Quang Nam, according to the center.
