Nearly 15,600 new Covid cases reported, deaths exceed 31,000

HCMC – The Ministry of Health today, December 25, confirmed 15,586 new Covid-19 cases, while 241 Covid-19 deaths were reported, raising the total number of Covid-19 fatalities to 31,007.

As for the new infections, 27 cases were imported and 15,559 were locally infected, detected in 57 localities.

Hanoi still accounted for the most infections, at 1,879, followed by Tay Ninh with 946, HCMC with 885, Vinh Long with 875 and Ca Mau with 835.

Khanh Hoa, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Bac Lieu, Tra Vinh and Haiphong detected 425-793 cases each, while other cities and provinces had fewer than 400 new infections each.

The new cases have sent the country’s domestic transmissions in the fourth Covid wave to over 1.63 million.

Today, 14,423 Covid patients were announced to have fully recovered, sending the total number of recoveries in the current fourth wave to some 1.23 million. Meanwhile, there are currently over 7,760 critically ill Covid patients in the country.

The Ministry of Health also reported 241 Covid-19 deaths, including 42 in HCMC, 39 in Dong Nai, 18 each in An Giang and Binh Duong, 16 in Tien Giang, 12 each in Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, Kien Giang and Can Tho, and 10 in Vinh Long. Twelve other localities had fewer than 10 Covid-19 deaths each.

According to the HCMC government, from December 17 to 23, nine districts in the city–3, 6, 7, 8, Binh Tan, Tan Phu, Can Gio, Cu Chi and Hoc Mon–were at low risk of Covid-19 transmission.

Meanwhile, Thu Duc City and 12 other districts–1, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, Binh Thanh, Go Vap, Tan Binh, Nha Be, Binh Chanh and Phu Nhuan–were at moderate risk, meaning no district in the city was at high risk of transmission.

Two districts–Tan Binh and Binh Chanh–upgraded their Covid-19 transmission risk level from low to moderate, while District 10 saw its transmission risk level change from high to moderate, and Binh Tan, from moderate to low.

The whole of HCMC was still at moderate risk.

The city recorded nearly 5,500 new cases from December 17 to 23, much lower than the 7,700 cases in the previous week.

As of December 23, all residents 18 and older in the city had got at least one Covid vaccine dose each and all people 50 and older had been fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, in Hanoi, six other districts seeing its transmission risk level change from moderate to high, including Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Hoang Mai, Long Bien, Nam Tu Liem and Tay Ho, besides Dong Da and Hai Ba Trung.

Only Phuc Tho District was at low risk, while 21 others at moderate risk.
