HCMC – Vietnam reported 1,239 fresh Covid cases today, May 27, in 46 provinces and cities, falling by 36 cases day-on-day, said the Ministry of Health.

Hanoi saw the most cases at 297, followed by Vinh Phuc with 86 cases. Other localities recorded fewer than 65 cases each.

The ministry added that 9,365 coronavirus patients were declared free of the disease while no new fatalities were recorded today.

Up to now, the country has reported more than 10.7 million infections, with over 9.4 million of them having recovered and 43,078 dead.

Given a sharp fall in the daily case count, the health authority of Binh Duong Province is working to disband Covid field hospitals, Huynh Minh Chin, deputy director of the provincial Health Department, said yesterday.

Following the disbandment of the field hospitals, medical centers across this southern province are told to properly arrange beds, medical equipment to treat Covid patients at their facilities or in special zones.

During the peak of the outbreak in Binh Duong last year, the province set up 33 Covid treatment facilities and 173 quarantine centers that could serve some 80,000-100,000 patients at a time.

According to the provincial health authority, the province is seeing a steep decline in new  infections and a low death rate. However, cases linked to other seasonal diseases such as dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth, hepatitis, and Japanese encephalitis are on the rise. As for dengue fever alone, five deaths have been reported in the province so far.

Chin added that the health authority has converted pop-up healthcare stations into regular ones to handle the prevention and control of seasonal diseases.

In related news, the northern province of Quang Ninh will begin administering the second booster shot to local people from June 6 to July 31, the provincial government said today.

Workers of coal mining companies, those in industrial parks, medical workers and healthcare frontliners will get the fourth dose first, followed by local residents in the province. Around 368,500 people are expected to receive the fourth dose.

As of May 25, nearly 960,000 people aged 18 and above in Quang Ninh had received the third dose; nearly 124,000 children had got two doses.
