HCMC – The Ministry of Health reported 3,088 new Covid cases today, May 4, with all of them locally infected, up 379 cases day-on-day.

The cases were recorded in 48 cities and provinces. Hanoi still had the highest number, at 705, followed by Phu Tho with 268 and Vinh Phuc with 198.

Nghe An, Quang Ninh and Bac Kan were among seven provinces with over 100 cases each.

Since the pandemic broke out, Vietnam has had more than 10.66 million cases in total. Of them, over 9.3 million coronavirus patients have recovered while over 43,000 others have died.

Today, more than 42,000 Covid patients were announced to have recovered from the disease, 14 times higher than the new cases.

Meanwhile, three Covid deaths were recorded in An Giang, Ben Tre and Binh Duong.

According to the Ministry of Health, it is consulting with members of the national anti-Covid steering committee and other relevant agencies over a draft plan to respond to Covid-19 in 2022-2023.

The ministry has worked out two scenarios. In the first scenario, coronavirus variants will continue evolving. However, thanks to herd immunity, serious illness and death from Covid are falling and the situation in coronavirus hotspots is not as serious as earlier.

In the second scenario, new coronavirus variants may appear and reduce the effectiveness of herd immunity. As a result, the numbers of cases in severe condition and deaths will rise, especially among vulnerable groups.

To proactively respond to the pandemic and minimize its impact, vaccinations should be accelerated while management and treatment should be enhanced. Treatment facilities will be established based on the developments of the pandemic in provinces. District-level hospitals will be assigned to receive and treat Covid patients if needed.

All residents and agencies must be watchful. While applying measures in the first scenario, preparations must be done for the second scenario.
