HCMC – The number of qualified rice exporters has declined by 24% compared to August 2023, according to data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The latest list includes 161 businesses meeting the criteria for rice export, down from the 210 reported in August.
HCMC has the most qualified exporters, at 36, followed by Can Tho City with 34 and Long An Province with 22. Multiple provinces, including Ha Nam, Hau Giang, Khanh Hoa, Lang Son, and Thanh Hoa, have only one certified rice exporter each.
The decline in the number of eligible rice exporters has continued, with the ministry’s October 2023 update showing only 170 qualified rice traders.
Vietnam exported over 8.1 million tons of rice last year, generating US$4.7 billion in revenue.
This year, market watchers projected rice prices would become volatile. Rice export restrictions in India are expected to lead rice prices to continue rising, while increased demand from importing nations such as Indonesia and the Philippines may further contribute to a surge in rice prices.
Vietnam has set a target of having rice output of 43 million tons, and exporting eight million tons of rice in 2024.
