HCMC – Vietnam’s Covid case count has reached over 2.68 million as 42,439 new Covid cases were reported this evening, February 18, the highest single-day Covid spike so far, according to the Ministry of Health.

Among the latest cases, 12 were imported and 42,427 others were locally infected in all 63 cities and provinces, up 6,237 cases against yesterday.

Hanoi City as usual recorded the highest number of domestic infections at 4,549, followed by Vinh Phuc with 2,158 and Quang Ninh with 2,018.

Phu Tho, Nam Dinh, Thai Nguyen, Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Haiphong, Bac Giang, Nghe An, Lao Cai, Hai Duong, Lang Son and Binh Dinh detected 1,109-1,789 infections each. Other localities had fewer than 1,000 cases each.

Since the ongoing fourth wave of the Covid pandemic emerged in late April last year, the country has reported over 2.67 million domestic cases.

The ministry also reported 80 new Covid fatalities in 31 cities and provinces, taking the Covid death toll to 39,358.

In related news, the Hanoi government has decided to pause the return of primary-school students and sixth graders in urban districts planned on February 21 due to the complicated development of Covid and bad weather.

Under the decision, 400,000 students in grades from one to six in 12 urban districts will continue to study online at home until further notice, the local media reported.
