HCMC – Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of Rotterdam, the Netherlands has said port development and logistics needs a long-term plan by government.

Aboutaleb was speaking at a roundtable on port development and logistics held on July 28 in HCMC. The event was part of a HCMC visit by Aboutaleb from July 27 to 28.

Tran Quang Lam, director of the HCMC Department of Transport, told the roundtable that HCMC is among 50 major maritime centers in the world.

The city is working with maritime investors to develop a port with a capacity of up to 200,000 tons in Can Gio District, Lam said, adding that through the roundtable, HCMC expects to learn from Rotterdam’s experience in sustainable port development.

Carlos Zepeda, business manager at Port of Rotterdam International, said at the roundtable that like other ports in the world, Rotterdam is facing some challenges. These include facilitating access for bigger vessels and an area for higher cargo volumes and new industries, meeting the demand of the market for greater supply chain transparency and efficiency through digital transformation.
