HCMC – The Saigon Times Group, in collaboration with the Vietnam Pharmaceutical Companies Association (VNPCA), NS BlueScope Vietnam Company’s Colorbond® and GMPC Vietnam Company, will hold a forum titled “Enhancing the competitiveness of pharmaceutical manufacturing” at the Rex Hotel in HCMC on March 9.

The forum will bring together over 100 experts and representatives of departments, agencies and leading pharmaceutical firms to provide their knowledge and experience in the pharmaceutical industry, moving toward establishing a link between producers and buyers to ramp up pharmaceutical production and export.

To drive up the local pharmaceutical industry, the forum is also aimed at discussing solutions to remove obstacles facing the industry and improve the competitiveness of local pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The forum will feature a seminar and five discussions with such speakers as Nguyen Dieu Ha, general secretary and chief of the office of VNPCA; Associate Professor Dr Le Van Truyen, former Deputy Minister of Health; Dr Phan Van Hieu, chairman and CEO of CVI Pharma, Truong Cao Tue, director of production, safety management and regulatory affairs at Nippon Chemiphar Vietnam Company and a representative of a material production firm.

According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam’s pharmaceutical industry grows 10%-12% a year on average. In 2021, the total value of the local pharmaceutical market stood at US$6.9 billion, but local drug producers remained minor players on the market. The country has some 250 pharmaceutical production plants, but they mainly produce generic medicine.

Locally-manufactured pharmaceutical products account for only 45% of the total drug value.

The locally-produced drugs are targeted at 75% of the country’s medicine consumption and 60% of the total pharmaceutical value by 2025, by the Government.

Improving the competitiveness of Vietnamese pharmaceutical firms in the local and global markets is a key aim of the national pharmaceutical industry development program until 2030 with a vision toward 2045, which was approved in 2021 by the Government.

The forum is expected to contribute to fulfilling the target and helping the pharmaceutical industry thrive.
