HCMC – The widespread heatwave in southern Vietnam will end from May 2, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

On May 1, the southeastern region is expected to experience heat with maximum temperatures of 35–36 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 36 degrees Celsius and minimum relative humidity at 50–55%.

The Mekong Delta will see localized heat, with some areas above 35 degrees Celsius, occurring mainly from 12:00 p.m. to 04:00 p.m.

The agency said forecast temperatures may differ from actual outdoor conditions by 2–4 degrees Celsius, or more depending on surface conditions such as concrete and asphalt. The heat risk is classified at level 1.

For May, average temperatures nationwide are projected to be 0.5–1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the multi-year average. Heatwaves are expected to increase in frequency and intensity in the northern and central regions through August, before easing from around September. In the Central Highlands and southern regions, heat is expected to gradually decline from late May.

Authorities warned that heat combined with low humidity may increase the risk of fires and explosions in residential areas due to higher electricity demand, and may lead to dehydration with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

Health experts advised limiting outdoor activity between 10:00 a.m. and 04:00 p.m., wearing protective clothing when necessary, maintaining hydration of 1.5–2 liters per day, and avoiding prolonged exposure to hot weather.
