HCMC – Storm Yagi has intensified by three levels a day after entering the East Sea and is projected to continue strengthening as it moves towards the Gulf of Tonkin, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

At 7 a.m. this morning, the storm was spotted in the northern East Sea, about 770 kilometers from Hainan Island (China), packing winds at level 11 and gusting at level 13.

Over the past 24 hours, Storm Yagi has strengthened from level 8 to level 11. It is expected to continue intensifying over the next 24 hours, potentially increasing by two more levels and possibly becoming even stronger after that.

It is moving west-northwest at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.

By 7 a.m. tomorrow, the storm’s eye is predicted to be about 520 kilometers east of Hainan Island, with maximum winds of 149 kilometers per hour, equivalent to level 13, and gusts up to level 16.

The storm will maintain its westward movement at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour, later accelerating to 10-15 kilometers per hour, with winds reaching level 14 and gusts at level 17.

International meteorological agencies anticipate that the storm will pass over the northern part of Hainan Island before entering the northern Gulf of Tonkin. After passing through Hainan Island, the storm’s intensity is expected to decrease slightly, by 1-2 levels.

“This is a powerful storm, with strong winds likely to impact a wide area along the provinces along the northern and north central coasts,” said a representative of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Due to the storm, the northeastern waters of the East Sea will experience strong winds ranging from levels 8 to 10, along with rough seas.

On September 5-6, as the storm moves through the northern East Sea, maximum wind speeds are expected to reach level 14, with gusts up to level 17, and waves reaching heights of 9-11 meters.
