Preventing age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition that may result in blurred or no vision in the center of the visual field. It is often found in old people. AMD is one of the reasons causing visual degeneration, or even blindness, in old people, especially those in their 50s and older. It is caused by damage to the macula, which makes it hard for the patient to read or operate a vehicle. AMD has also been found in young people due to the impacts of radiation, harmful chemicals, traumas or malnutrition. Therefore, it is important to prevent AMD. AMD is divided into “dry” and “wet” forms, with the dry form making up over 80% of such cases. Those with dry form AMD have drusen, cellular debris in their macula that gradually damages light-sensitive cells and leads to vision loss. There has been no way to treat the dry form AMD.
