The fallout of the fake milk scandal

Imported colostrum, powdered milk infused with bird’s nests, cordyceps, and even so-called cure-alls promoted by influencers are all sweet deceptions for consumers. Much has been said about law enforcement and product regulation—but could there be deeper reasons rooted in human nature? After the Ministry of Public Security dismantled a fake milk production ring involving up to 600 brands, consumers were left bewildered—many of these brands had been recommended by doctors. In the midst of the public outcry, an interview emerged with a leading pediatrician from a major city who was believed to have frequently prescribed one of the newly exposed fake milk brands. As someone working in the legal field, I find the doctor’s explanation both reasonable and revealing. He argued that doctors, too, are victims of the fake milk scandal. They have no means to verify the authenticity of products and must rely entirely on the circulation permits granted by the Ministry of Health. Moreover, the so-called “fake” milk in question does not necessarily contain toxins—it simply fails to meet the standards or ingredients claimed on its label. Is it true that everybody is the victim?
