For a greener, stronger grid

According to a recent report by SSI Securities Corporation, the prime minister issued Decision No. 768/QD-TTg on April 15, 2025, approving the revised National Power Development Plan VIII (Revised NPDP VIII), replacing the earlier version approved in May 2023. This revised version takes into account a scenario of high and sustainable growth for Vietnam over the next decade, while also aiming to ensure national energy security with several key highlights. First, the specific targets for total installed power capacity have been revised in NPDP VIII to reach 183–236GW by 2030 and 775–839GW by 2050, above the original targets of around 160GW by 2030 and 573GW by 2050. As of the end of 2024, Vietnam’s installed capacity had only reached 82.4GW. In addition, the revised plan reaffirms the commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, a core goal already stated in the earlier plan. Second, capacity targets for coal-fired and gas/LNG power plants remain largely unchanged, together accounting for about 36% of total capacity by 2030.
