HCMC – A newly built bridge linking downtown HCMC and Thu Thiem Peninsula will be opened to traffic on Thursday, April 28, boosting connectivity between the central business district and the new urban area of Thu Thiem.

Thu Thiem 2 Bridge is expected to ease traffic pressure on the Saigon River Tunnel and the Saigon Bridge, the local media reported.

It is vital to connect to the Thu Thiem New Urban Area, contributing to reducing traffic jams in HCMC and boosting the development of Thu Duc City and HCMC as a whole, said Phan Cong Bang, deputy director of the HCMC Department of Transport.

The project has faced multiple obstacles in site clearance and legal changes on build-transfer projects.

According to Dai Quang Minh Real Estate Investment Corporation, the investor of the project, the 1.5-kilometer Thu Thiem 2 Bridge starts at an intersection of Ton Duc Thang and Le Duan streets in District 1 and ends at an intersection with Tran Bach Dang Street in Thu Thiem, Thu Duc City.

To date, the bridge has been completed. Contractors have been putting the final touches so that the bridge can be opened to traffic as planned.

According to Dai Quang Minh, road users will choose the bridge to travel between the downtown and Thu Duc City, instead of the Saigon Bridge and the Saigon River Tunnel. The company has proposed the transport authority regulate traffic on the bridge to prevent congestion.

Besides the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge, Bang said provincial road No. 9 (Dang Thuc Vinh Street) in Hoc Mon District and a road parallel with Vo Van Kiet Avenue in District 1 will be put into use on the occasion of Vietnam’s Reunification Day (April 30).

In addition, the city will accelerate the completion of procedures to start work on three projects: National Highway 50 expansion in Binh Chanh District, a road linking Cong Hoa and Tran Quoc Hoan streets in Tan Binh District and An Phu Intersection in Thu Duc City.
