Traffic accidents claim 48 lives and injure 61 at Tet

HCMC – Some 82 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, leaving 48 people dead and 61 others injured from January 20 to 23.

According to a report of the Ministry of Public Security, the second day of the Lunar New Year holiday (January 23) saw 18 traffic accidents across the country, claiming 10 lives and injured 13 others, said the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Of which, one was injured due to an inland waterway accident, other deaths and injuries resulted from the road accidents.

Up to 1,683 traffic violation cases were handled by the traffic and local police with total fines of VND3.45 billion, resulting in 981 vehicles being detained and 309 driving licenses of all types being suspended yesterday, January 23.

Common violations included drink driving, not wearing helmets, driving without licenses or vehicle registration documents, and speeding.

The second day of the Lunar New Year holiday saw a drop of one traffic accident at 5.3%, but the number of injuries increased by 2, at 18.2%. Meanwhile, the number of deaths was reported unchanged over the same day of last year.

Traffic accidents dropped by five cases, at 5.7% during the first four days of the Lunar New Year holiday over the year-ago period, claiming three lives, a reduction of 5.9% and injuring 16 others, up 35.6%.
