According to the Vietnam News Agency, Lam’s first visit to Cuba in his capacity as Party General Secretary and President of Vietnam held historic significance and marked a new chapter in the special friendship between the two countries.

Vietnam and Cuba have enjoyed a strong and supportive relationship since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960. Cuba played a pivotal role in the international solidarity movement to support Vietnam’s struggle for national liberation.

The Vietnam-Cuba Trade Agreement was signed in 2018 and entered into effect on April 1, 2020. The agreement’s preferential terms have created favorable conditions and facilitated bilateral trade and investment ever since.
