HCMC – Vietnam and Indonesia have elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new phase in cooperation between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Vietnam’s Party General Secretary To Lam and Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto made the announcement today, March 10. The move aims to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and security ties between the two countries as they approach the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

Lam is paying a state visit to Indonesia, an official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat, and an official visit to Singapore from March 9 to 13. Subianto said he was pleased to welcome the Vietnamese delegation during this anniversary year, adding that the two countries share similar development goals, including aspirations linked to major national milestones in the coming decades.

The two leaders agreed to boost economic cooperation, targeting bilateral trade of US$18 billion. Prabowo welcomed Vietnamese investment and stressed the importance of balanced trade growth.

Both sides committed to expanding collaboration in digital transformation, science, technology, and innovation. The two nations also agreed to strengthen ties in the green and digital economies, aligning with broader regional development goals.

Vietnam and Indonesia reaffirmed their cooperation in ASEAN and other international forums, pledging to maintain joint efforts in addressing regional security and development challenges.

Subianto said he plans to visit Vietnam soon to further strengthen ties. He expressed support for agreements signed during the visit, emphasizing their role in fostering economic and strategic collaboration.

Following the announcement, the two leaders witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements. These include a letter of intent between Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs on digital and technical cooperation. Other agreements cover collaboration in science, technology, and fisheries.

Both governments will implement these agreements to enhance economic ties and regional stability.
