Vietnam, Laos deepen bilateral ties

HCMC – Party General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his willingness to work with Vietnamese President To Lam to strengthen unique and unparalleled relations between the two neighboring countries during their talks today morning, July 11.

President To Lam and Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith co-chaired a high-level dialogue between the delegations of the two countries, marking Lam’s first visit to Laos in his capacity as President of Vietnam.

The Lao leader noted that President Lam’s choice of Laos as the first leg of his first foreign tour, which takes in Laos and Cambodia, underscores Vietnam’s strong commitment to the enduring friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

He sincerely thanked Vietnam for its support during Laos’ struggle for national independence and in the nation’s current development and construction efforts.

In response, President Lam proposed that both sides continue to maintain regular exchanges of delegations and high-level contacts, enhancing the effectiveness of important bilateral cooperation mechanisms. This, he said, would contribute to sustaining and enhancing the highest level of close and trusted political relations.

The two leaders also emphasized the need for increased consultation, exchange of experiences, and mutual support to tackle challenges together. They reiterated both countries’ steadfast commitment to prioritizing and enhancing their strong friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation.

Vietnam and Laos will further enhance economic cooperation, particularly through promoting trade and investment. Vietnam continues to be one of Laos’ leading trade and investment partners. Both sides have also made efforts to resolve final obstacles and challenges in certain key projects.

President Lam assured that Vietnam will wholeheartedly support Laos in successfully fulfilling its international responsibilities in 2024, including its roles as ASEAN Chair and AIPA President.

During their talks, President Lam announced a Vietnamese gift for Laos, comprising 20 Vietnamese-made Vinfast VF9 electric vehicles, which are expected to help Laos successfully carry out activities in the Laos ASEAN Chairmanship year 2024.

After the talks, the leaders of the two countries witnessed the signing of cooperation documents in various fields, including construction, population management systems, and enhancing aviation transport connectivity.
