CAN THO – Vietnamese exporters won three contracts in Indonesia’s October rice tender, totaling 83,500 tons of 5% broken rice, according to Indonesia’s National Logistics Agency (Bulog).
Northern Food Corporation (Vinafood 1) secured LOT 7 with 28,500 tons, Ngoc Quang Phat Company won LOT 8 for 29,000 tons, and Vinacam Group landed LOT 13 with a contract for 26,000 tons.
Thailand obtained the largest share, winning contracts for 200,500 tons. Other contracts went to Pakistan with 81,500 tons, India with 54,500 tons, and Myanmar with 29,000 tons.
Bid prices varied, with Vietnamese firms and India offering US$510 per ton on a cost and freight (CNF) basis. Thailand’s rates ranged from US$511 to US$523 per ton, Myanmar at US$517 per ton, and Pakistan won with bids between US$479 and US$485 per ton.
In total, 449,000 tons were awarded, slightly below the 500,000-ton target due to unmet agreements with exporters in India and Myanmar.
This marks Indonesia’s ninth rice tender of 2024. In September, Bulog purchased 450,000 tons from Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Thailand. Indonesia’s rice imports for the year are expected to reach 3.6 million tons to stabilize supplies impacted by challenging weather.
Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicated that Indonesia ranked as Vietnam’s second-largest rice buyer in the first eight months of 2024, with nearly 914,000 tons worth US$558 million shipped, a year-on-year increase of 27% in volume and 54% in value.
