HCMC – Vietnam has requested preferential loans from the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to finance critical infrastructure projects, including high-speed railways and major airports.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made these requests during his meetings with WB Vice President Manuela Ferro and AIIB President Jin Liqun on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Laos on October 10, the local media reported.
Chinh asked the WB to continue providing soft loans for vital projects such as high-speed rail, urban rail systems, seaports, and airports.
In response, the WB reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Vietnam’s development goals, including the ambition to become a high-income country by 2045. The bank is also working on diversifying its financial resources to offer lower interest rates on development loans.
In his meeting with AIIB, Chinh asked for assistance for key projects, including the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong and Lang Son-Hanoi railways. He also sought AIIB’s support in technology transfer and workforce training.
AIIB pledged to help Vietnam secure funding for infrastructure projects, particularly in sectors like energy, transport, healthcare, and climate adaptation in the Mekong Delta.
