HCMC — Vietnam’s pork consumption is expected to rise to nearly 39 kilograms per person in 2025, underscoring pork’s dominant role in the country’s food market, according to a recent report.

Vietnam ranks fourth globally and first in Southeast Asia in pork consumption, the Domestic Market Report 2025 by the Agency for Domestic Market Surveillance and Development under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Per capita pork consumption has steadily grown in recent years. It stood at about 30 kg per year in 2021, increased to around 37 kg in 2024, and is projected to reach nearly 39 kg in 2025, calculated on a carcass-weight basis.

Pork accounts for 63.68% of total livestock product consumption in Vietnam, placing the country fourth worldwide by pork consumption volume.

The agency said pork has a strong influence on the broader food market and plays a significant role in shaping the consumer price index due to its large share in household spending.

Consumption patterns are shifting, with consumers increasingly favoring products produced and distributed through closed supply chains. These linkages span from farming to processing and distribution and aim to ensure food safety and quality.

On the supply side, Vietnam’s pork sector has continued to move away from small-scale farming toward larger, more concentrated operations. These farms apply biosecurity standards and emission-reduction measures, supporting output growth and meeting domestic and export demand.

In 2025, the national pig herd expanded as household farmers transitioned to semi-industrial models and partnerships with enterprises. Favorable live hog prices in the first half of the year also encouraged increased investment.

Live pork output in 2025 is estimated at about 5.4 million metric tons, up 5% from the previous year. Imports of pork carcasses are expected to reach around 200,000 tons, up 14% in volume year-on-year, though import prices fell about 3.5%.

Authorities said ample supply in 2025 was a key factor behind falling live hog and pork prices. The market also faced periodic impacts from concerns over product quality and animal disease developments.

Live hog prices in the first seven months of 2025 ranged between VND65,000 and VND75,000 per kilogram, before declining to around VND54,000–55,000 per kilogram toward the end of the year.

Retail pork prices typically ranged from VND100,000 to VND150,000 per kilogram. Compared with a year earlier, live hog prices fell by about VND10,000–12,000 per kilogram, a decline of 16–19%.
