Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant to be operational by end-2022

HCMC – The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) is ramping up efforts to begin commercial operations of the first generator of the Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant on November 30 and put the whole plant into service on the final day of this year, said a PVN official.

The thermal power plant project, which is located in the northern province of Thai Binh, is over 93% complete. The disbursed capital reached VND35.491 trillion, equivalent to nearly 85% of the total investment, Le Manh Hung, general director of PVN, told a working session with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh last weekend.

The remaining work on the project includes a trial operation, appraisal and the construction of a coal transport system.

The PVN leader said the following milestones set for the project would be challenging for the project’s investor and contractor, as equipment had been installed and left unused for a long time.

The relevant units had made efforts to preserve the equipment, but the equipment has to undergo check and maintenance before the trial operation or might even need replacement, Hung said, adding that they pledged massive efforts to complete the project as planned.

The construction of the Thai Binh 2 thermal power project began in 2011, with a total investment of VND41.799 trillion. The project has a capacity of 1,200 MW and is among the biggest thermal power projects in the northern mainland.

The project was heavily affected by multiple woes, violations and delays during the construction process in the past. These issues have been solved recently.
