First LNG carrier arrives in Ba Ria-Vung Tau

HCMC – The Maran Gas Achilles, an Egyptian-flagged vessel carrying 70,000 tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG), has arrived at the Thi Vai LNG Terminal in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, making it the first LNG ship to come to a Vietnam port.

The LNG carrier docked at the LNG Thi Vai Terminal in Phu My Town, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province at 9 a.m. on July 10, carrying LNG worth VND830 billion.

This shipment marks Vietnam’s first import of LNG, purchased by PetroVietnam Gas.

Although the Maran Gas Achilles is not as large as other container vessels typically arriving at the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Terminal, two skilled Vietnamese navigators were tasked with safely steering the ship from ocean buoy no. 0 to the terminal.

The LNG warehouse, gas transmission pipeline, and LNG storage tank owned by PV Gas have an investment cost of nearly VND6,500 billion, with the storage tank alone valued at VND6,135 billion.

PV Gas’s warehouse system, established in 2019, has been completed and is now capable of accommodating the first LNG shipment to Vietnam.

According to PV Gas, the use of LNG will contribute to a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to charcoal and crude oil.

The Thi Vai LNG warehouse of PV Gas can handle carriers with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 100,000. Its LNG storage tank has a capacity of 180,000 cubic meters, with an annual capacity of one million tons of LNG. PV Gas plans to increase its capacity to three million tons of LNG per year in the future.
