Nearly 600 aircraft go-arounds estimated at Tan Son Nhat airport in June

HCMC – Nearly 600 arrival flights at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in June were required to perform go-arounds before landing, according to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM).

In a recent report sent to the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) attributed most of the go-arounds to heavy rain in the southern region of the nation.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport often recorded heavy rain in the afternoons and evenings of HCMC, with 18 days affected by such rain in June. Consequently, many flights had to be delayed for landing to ensure safety.

The Air Traffic Flow Management estimated that 571 flights had to perform go-arounds before landing at Tan Son Nhat last month, accounting for 5% of the total arrival flights. For example, on June 4, there were 101 go-arounds, which increased to 109 on June 29 due to adverse weather conditions, making up 30% of the total arrival flights for that day.

Tan Son Nhat reported that out of the 571 flights, 561, or 98% of the total, were affected by bad weather.

Vietnam Airlines officials previously expressed concerns about the high costs incurred by airlines due to prolonged go-arounds before landing, and they requested the Ministry of Transport to develop solutions to address air traffic congestion.
