HCMC – Vietnam experienced a significant number of earthquakes last month, with at least 93 recorded, ranging in magnitudes from 2.5 to 4.2, according to the Institute of Geophysics.
The majority of these quakes occurred in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum. Seismic activities were reported in the northern province of Son La, and in the central coastal provinces of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai.
Kon Plong District in Kon Tum Province was particularly affected, with a staggering count of 90 earthquakes reported in July alone. These occurrences brought the total number of earthquakes in the district in the year to date to over 220.
On July 7, the district was struck by a series of earthquakes, with at least 14 recorded in a single day. The most powerful tremor reached a magnitude of 4.2.
The Institute of Geophysics has observed a notable increase in the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes since the beginning of the year. In response, they have deployed a team of experts to Kon Plong District to establish supplementary facilities that will enhance earthquake monitoring capabilities.
In September 2022, three additional earthquake warning and monitoring stations were installed at the Thuong Kon Tum Hydropower Plant, bringing the total number of operational monitoring stations in the area to six.
