HCMC – One person was killed in a road accident involving four vehicles on the Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet Expressway early this morning, March 1, reported the local media.
The incident occurred at 2 a.m. in Hong Liem Commune, Ham Thuan Bac District, Binh Thuan Province. Involved in the collision were four vehicles, including a HCMC-registered tractor-trailer traveling southbound on the expressway.
As the tractor-trailer approached Hong Liem Commune, it came to a halt due to traffic congestion. At this moment, the truck behind also slowed down to wait, unexpectedly being strongly rear-ended by a Binh Dinh Province-registered truck.
Consequently, the truck was pushed to collide with the tractor-trailer ahead. Another truck registered in Khanh Hoa Province continued to strongly rear-end the Binh Dinh-registered truck.
One driver was killed at the scene, while another was trapped in their vehicle and required rescue. The collision resulted in significant damage to the four vehicles involved.
The accident led to a traffic backlog of over 30 minutes on the expressway heading from Phan Rang (Ninh Thuan Province) to HCMC.
The Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet Expressway, spanning over 100 kilometers through Binh Thuan Province, lacks emergency lanes, with only intermittent emergency stopping strips spaced 4-5 kilometers apart.
Since its inauguration in May of last year, the expressway has witnessed several road accidents, requiring enhanced safety measures.
