HCMC – Vietnam is seeing a concerning surge in measles cases, with 203 cases reported, a 2.7-fold increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Health Ministry.
The General Department of Preventive Medicine has issued warnings that measles cases and outbreaks are anticipated to continue rising, particularly in regions with low vaccination coverage. Hanoi reported its first measles case of 2024 last week, contrasting with no reported cases during the same period in 2023.
Disruptions in vaccine supply resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the expansion of the immunization program in 2023 have adversely affected vaccination rates among children. Consequently, many children who have not got vaccinated as per the schedule are at risk of triggering disease outbreaks, including measles.
To curb the spread of measles, the General Department of Preventive Medicine has advised parents to promptly take children aged 9 months, who have not yet received the measles vaccine, or those aged 18 months, who have not completed the two doses of measles vaccine, to local healthcare centers for vaccination.
Furthermore, it is crucial for parents to remain vigilant and seek medical attention promptly if their children exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose or rash. Timely examination and treatment are essential to prevent severe outcomes of measles. Additionally, avoiding close contact with suspected measles cases is highly recommended.
