Perched atop Hai Van Pass, which connects Danang City and Thua Thien-Hue Province on the central coast, Hai Van Gate is a renowned destination for both local and international tourists. The gate offers breathtaking views, with lush forested hills on one side and the East Sea on the other, often shrouded in mist.
Hai Van Gate was constructed during the reign of King Minh Mang in 1826, serving as a strategic military outpost to control the critical north-south route and protect Danang Bay and Hue Citadel.
Positioned at an altitude of 490 meters above sea level, the gate once functioned as a formidable military fortress, complete with ramparts, forts, and cannons.
After nearly two centuries, the site had fallen into disrepair. In 2017, Hai Van Gate was recognized as a national relic, and in 2021, local authorities initiated a renovation project with a budget exceeding VND40 billion.
On August 1, Thua Thien-Hue Province and Danang City officially reopened the fully restored Hai Van Gate, drawing a significant number of tourists eager to experience its historical and natural beauty.
