HCMC – Typhoon Krathon entered the northeastern waters of the East Sea early today, October 1, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

This morning Krathon strengthened into a super typhoon with winds of up to 184-201 kilometers per hour. It is even stronger than typhoon Yagi, which sustained winds of up to 149 kilometers per hour. In Vietnam, Yagi caused VND81.5 trillion damage, killed nearly 320 people and injured nearly 2,000 others.

Krathon is moving northwest at 5 kilometers per hour and is not expected to directly strike Vietnam’s coastal or inland areas.

The storm is forecast to continue moving northwest at the same speed through October 2, sustaining winds of up to 201 kilometers per hour. It will primarily affect the northeastern part of the northern East Sea.

Krathon is expected to weaken as it moves northeast toward Taiwan, with wind speeds decreasing to 133-149 kilometers per hour by October 3 and further dropping to 89-102 kilometers per hour by October 4.

The northeastern East Sea is forecast to experience strong winds, thunderstorms, and high waves of 7 to 9 meters due to the powerful storm.

On September 30, Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development urged coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Binh Dinh to prepare for potential storm impacts, advising local authorities to monitor vessels at sea and prepare for rescue efforts.
