HCMC – Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged ASEAN to focus on self-reliance, enhanced connectivity, and innovation to lead socio-economic development in the region.
Speaking at the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Laos on October 9, Chinh emphasized the importance of unity and resilience within ASEAN, while advocating for a fresh mindset to drive future growth.
He noted that while the global environment is relatively peaceful, regional tensions and conflicts continue. Despite these challenges, ASEAN stands out as a bright spot for economic growth and regional cooperation.
Chinh expressed gratitude for the support of ASEAN member states following typhoon Yagi, stressing the importance of solidarity and mutual assistance as essential pillars of the regional bloc.
He outlined three strategic directions for ASEAN: enhancing self-reliance and strategic autonomy, boosting regional connectivity, and fostering innovation. Chinh highlighted the need for ASEAN to maintain its centrality, independence, and balanced approach in international relations.
The Vietnamese leader also voiced optimism about Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN. Timor-Leste was granted official observer status and in-principle approval for membership during the 2022 ASEAN Summit in Cambodia.
Earlier in the day, Chinh attended a working breakfast with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to discuss trilateral relations.
He also held separate meetings with Laos’ top leaders, including Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith and National Assembly Chairman Saysomphone Phomvihane.
