HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has released a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector by 45.62 million tons of CO2 by 2030.

Between 2014 and 2021, the transport sector emitted over 44.2 million tons of CO2, with emissions estimated to increase by 6-7% annually, potentially reaching nearly 90 million tons by 2030.

To address this, the ministry aims to achieve a 5.9% reduction in emissions, totaling 45.62 million tons by 2030. Specific targets include cutting 3.4 million tons by 2025 and 10.61 million tons by 2030.

Key initiatives include limiting fuel consumption for motorcycles, aiming for all new motorcycles to meet a green standard of 2.3 liters per 100 kilometers by 2030.

The ministry also intends for new passenger cars to meet fuel efficiency targets: under 4.7 liters per 100 km for cars under 1,400cc, under 5.3 liters per 100 km for cars between 1,400 and 2,000cc, and under 6.4 liters per 100 km for cars over 2,000cc.

The ministry also plans to improve public transportation, expand service quality, and promote a shift from private to public transport in major cities.

Railway infrastructure upgrades are also prioritized, including constructing the North-South high-speed rail line. By 2030, the ministry aims to increase the railway freight market share to 0.27% and freight volume to 7.35 billion tons.
