HCMC – Vietnam’s National Assembly has approved the resumption of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project, ending an eight-year suspension.
During the closing session of its eighth sitting on November 30, the National Assembly endorsed the Government’s proposal dated November 25 to proceed with the project.
The Government has been tasked with expediting resource allocation, implementing recommendations from relevant authorities, and proposing amendments to laws, including the Law on Atomic Energy.
Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh, presenting the proposal on November 27, emphasized that nuclear power is gaining global priority due to its role in combating climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and ensuring energy security.
Vietnam’s electricity demand continues to grow rapidly. With the national electricity system’s capacity at approximately 80 GW, an additional 70 GW is projected to be needed by 2030, increasing to 400-500 GW by 2050.
The Government highlighted that nuclear power would diversify Vietnam’s electricity supply while serving the dual goals of providing stable baseload power and supporting environmental protection. Restarting the Ninh Thuan project is deemed essential to address these challenges and align with the nation’s energy strategy.
