Phu Quoc sees inbound tourism surge during Lunar new year

The Saigon Times

Must read

HCMC – Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta has reported a surge in international tourism during this year’s Lunar New Year holiday, reported local media.

The island has welcomed an average of 38-40 international flights a day, with international arrivals accounting for 75% of total visitors.

On January 25, the first day of the nine-day holiday and the 26th day of the 12th Lunar month, Phu Quoc International Airport handled 54 flights, of which 38 were international.

Taiwanese travelers led the influx, with 10 daily flights to the island, surpassing the previously dominant South Korean market. Other key sources of international visitors included China, Kazakhstan, Poland, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

The spike in international arrivals has been attributed to several factors, including Phu Quoc’s growing reputation as a world-class destination, substantial investments in infrastructure and tourism products, and the island’s visa-on-arrival policy for international visitors.

Despite the performance of the high-end tourism sector, smaller businesses reported challenges in attracting domestic tourists, who accounted for only 30% of total visitors.

While the international airport saw an increase in passenger traffic, other entry points to the island reported a more relaxed atmosphere compared to previous years.
