HCMC – Vietnam and New Zealand have announced to upgrade their bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new milestone in the relationship between the two nations.
After their successful bilateral talks this afternoon (February 26), Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and visiting New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon participated in a joint press conference to announce the results of their talks.
PM Chinh said he was glad to announce that after 16 years of comprehensive partnership and five years of strategic partnership, the two countries decided to elevate their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Under the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership, the two nations will strengthen political trust and deepen bilateral relations in multiple sectors, he added.
New Zealand PM Luxon said that during the talks, the two government leaders discussed ways to boost trade and economic cooperation.
His four-day Vietnam visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and New Zealand.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$1.3 billion in 2023 and 2024. Both countries aim to increase it to US$3 billion by 2026.
New Zealand currently has 55 investment projects in Vietnam with total capital of US$208 million, ranking 39th among foreign investors. Meanwhile, Vietnam has 12 projects in New Zealand with registered capital of US$43.9 million.
The two nations cooperate in multiple sectors, including economic development, trade, and education.
