Hon Nua, a small island just two kilometers off the coast, remains one of Phu Yen’s best-kept secrets. With its crystal-clear water, unspoiled landscapes, and lack of mass tourism, it offers a perfect retreat for nature lovers seeking tranquility.

Located in Vung Ro Bay, Hon Nua marks the natural boundary between Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen provinces. Accessible by wooden boats, speedboats, or canoes, the journey to the island offers a stunning panorama of turquoise water and rugged cliffs. From afar, Hon Nua’s silhouette resembles a sleeping dinosaur resting on the sea, adding to its mystique.

Before setting sail, visitors often stop at local markets to purchase fresh seafood, which can be enjoyed onboard. Once on the island, a variety of outdoor activities await, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs.

A highlight of Hon Nua is its striking red lighthouse, perched atop a hill overlooking the sea. The short hike to the lighthouse is manageable, with paved pathways and sturdy railings. However, sudden rainfall may limit access, requiring visitors to admire it from a distance.

The best time to visit Hon Nua is from February to August, when the weather is dry, the sea is calm, and outdoor activities are at their best. March and April are particularly ideal, with mild temperatures, gentle breezes, and thriving marine life enhancing the experience.

Unlike many other tourist destinations, Hon Nua has no permanent residents or commercial facilities, aside from a military outpost and a few natural bird nests. Visitors are advised to bring their own food, water, and essentials. This lack of development preserves the island’s raw beauty, making it an ideal escape for those looking to immerse themselves in nature.
