Coastal views from Vi Ba mountain

With its tranquil scenery and gentle hiking trail, Vi Ba Mountain has become an appealing destination for travelers seeking a peaceful escape, early-morning cloud hunting, and sweeping coastal views from above.

Rising about 254 meters above sea level, Vi Ba Mountain is part of the Big Mountain (a.k.a. Tuong Ky) range and is located roughly two kilometers north of downtown Vung Tau Ward, HCMC. The mountain takes its name from a microwave transmission station once built on its summit, a reminder of its role in the area’s communications history.

The journey begins near Front Beach, following Tran Phu Street before turning into Vi Ba Alley. The route to the summit is about four to five kilometers long, following a paved road with a moderate incline. Shaded by lush trees for most of the way, the trail offers a comfortable walk suitable for visitors of varying fitness levels.

Reaching the transmission station typically takes 40 to 60 minutes on foot. Along the route, stone benches and small refreshment stalls offer convenient places to rest and enjoy the sea views. The best times to hike are between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., when visitors can catch the sunrise and watch clouds drift across the landscape, or in the late afternoon from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for sunset views over Front Beach.

Beyond its natural beauty, Vi Ba Mountain is home to several cultural and spiritual landmarks. Visitors can stop at Thich Ca Phat Dai Pagoda, known for its Buddhist architecture and a sculpture garden overlooking the sea. Nearby, the historic White Palace, a French-style villa dating to the late 19th century, offers a nostalgic setting amid mature frangipani trees.

On another hillside stands the striking white statue of Our Lady of Bai Dau (a.k.a. Mother Mary), overlooking the peaceful Bai Dau coastline. From these viewpoints and the mountain’s small cafés, visitors can take in panoramic views of Front Beach and Back Beach.

Local authorities have recently approved plans to expand Vi Ba Road and connect it to Alley 444 on Tran Phu Street, aiming to enhance tourism connectivity and strengthen forest fire prevention efforts.
